~The Casts~

Robert Downey, Jr. as Tony Stark / Iron Man:
A self-described genius, billionaire, playboy and philanthropist with a mechanical suit of armor of his own invention. Downey was cast as part of his four-picture deal with Marvel Studios, which includes Iron Man 2 and The Avengers.

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers / Captain America:
A World War II veteran who was enhanced to the peak of human physicality by an experimental serum. Evans was cast as part of a deal to star in three Marvel films, in addition to The Avengers.

Mark Ruffalo as Dr. Bruce Banner / Hulk:
A genius scientist who, because of exposure to gamma radiation, transforms into a monster when enraged or excited. Ruffalo was cast after negotiations between Marvel and Edward Norton broke down. About replacing Edward Norton, Ruffalo said, "I'm a friend of Ed's, and yeah, that wasn't a great way for all that to go down. But the way I see it is that Ed has bequeathed this part to me. I look at it as my generation's Hamlet."

Chris Hemsworth as Thor:
The god of thunder based on the Norse deity of the same name. Hemsworth was cast as part of a multiple movie deal. About Thor's motivations Hemsworth remarked, "I think [Thor's] motivation is much more of a personal one, in the sense that it's his brother that is stirring things up. Whereas everyone else, it's some bad guy who they've gotta take down. It's a different approach for me, or for Thor. He's constantly having to battle the greater good and what he should do vs. it's his little brother there."

Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow:
A highly trained spy working for the international peacekeeping organization, S.H.I.E.L.D. About the character and her relationship with Hawkeye, Johansson commented, "Our characters have a long history, they've fought together for a long time in a lot of battles in many different countries. We're the two members of this avenging group who are skilled warriors – we have no superpowers. Black Widow is definitely one of the team though. She's not in the cast simply to be a romantic foil or eye candy. She's there to fight, so I never felt like I was the only girl. We all have our various skills and it feels equal".

Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton / Hawkeye:
A S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and master archer known in the comics as the "World's Greatest Marksman". Renner said it was a very physical role and that he trained physically and practiced archery as much as possible in preparation.

Tom Hiddleston as Loki:
Thor's adoptive brother and nemesis based on the deity of the same name. n regard to his character's evolution from the film Thor, Hiddleston stated, "I think the Loki we see in The Avengers is further advanced. You have to ask yourself the question: how pleasant an experience is it disappearing into a wormhole that has been created by some kind of super nuclear explosion of his own making? So I think by the time Loki shows up in The Avengers he's seen a few things."

Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury:
The director of S.H.I.E.L.D., who was revealed in previous films to be coordinating the "Avenger Initiative". Jackson was brought to the project with a deal containing an option to play the character in up to nine Marvel films.

Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill:
A S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who works closely with Jackson's Nick Fury. Smulders, whom Joss Whedon once considered for his unproduced live-action Wonder Woman film, was selected from a short list of potential actresses including Morena Baccarin. Smulders' deal would integrate her into nine films.

Clark Gregg, Stellan Skarsgård and Gwyneth Paltrow reprise their roles from previous films as Phil Coulson, Erik Selvig, and Pepper Potts respectively. Paul Bettany returns to voice JARVIS.

~Facts About Avengers~

The Gangs's Mostly Here
There have been more than 500 "Avengers" comic books since Jack Kirby and Stan Lee debuted their answer to DC's "Justice League" back in 1963. Issue No. 1 included a team comprised of Thor, the Hulk, Iron Man, and two characters who don't appear in the film, Ant-Man and Wasp. Whedon's original script included the female superhero known as the Wasp, but when that didn't work he included Scarlett Johansson's character, the Black Widow, instead.

The Write Man
Before writer/director Joss Whedon tried his hand at penning a Marvel Studios screenplay, he was a seasoned veteran at writing Marvel comic books. Whedon has written both "X-men" and "Spider-Man" stories for Marvel, as well as numerous comics for other publishers. While he certainly relied on his vast comic book knowledge to pen "The Avengers" script, he also sought out the help of his talented cast, making the end product very much a collaborative effort.

The Future
While there currently aren't concrete plans to shoot a sequel, with all the money this film is already making, it seems like a pretty safe bet a sequel will be announced shortly. The pieces are certainly in place. Joss Whedon has an option to write and direct a sequel. And many of the major players have inked multi-picture deals. For example, Jackson signed on to do nine Marvel films all told. And though Feige has thus far denied any plans to do another standalone Hulk movie, Mark Ruffalo, who dons a superhero costume for the first time in "The Avengers," recently signed on for six more pictures. What we do know concretely at this point is that "Iron Man 3" is set to begin shooting in the next couple of weeks and is slated to be released one year from now; "Thor 2" begins shooting in London in a few months and is scheduled for a November 2012 opening; and "Captain America 2" is due out in April of 2014.

The Big Tease
The idea for creating the movie first came about in 2008, as "Iron Man" and "The Incredible Hulk" were being produced. Marvel Studios executive Kevin Feige imagined that the international peacekeeping force S.H.E.I.L.D., headed by Nick Fury, could easily play into the storylines of both films. Feige soon realized that none of the superheroes who form "The Avengers" had been secured for films by other studios. And so the big picture became clear. As a means of teasing the idea, Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson, made post-title cameos in all the stand-alone Avengers movies.

No Pain, No Gain
All of the stars did their own fight choreography on the often intense set. In the final scene, in order to get the action to look right, Tom Hiddleston (Loki) told the 6'3" Chris Hemsworth (Thor) to really hit him. Jeremy Renner, who plays Hawkeye, ripped a shoulder/back muscle while filming one of his fight scenes, which caused shooting to shut down. And after filming one particular scene, Johansson felt like she was actually beat up. "I was like, 'Can you hold it back, OK? You know, I'm trying to work it out here. I've got smaller muscles than you.' I was dragged across the [floor]. When we finally finished [filming] that scene I was just happy to be alive," says Johansson.
